THE global surveys have one constant finding on internet use, and the constant No. 1 is one that is outside of the OECD countries. That country is our own, social media-obsessive Philippines, with 83 percent of Filipinos registered as regular users of the World Wide Web. At least six global surveys have found that Filipinos are the top internet users in the world. We are also top in another area.
Filipinos spend the most time on the net; individual use is about 10 hours daily, far above the global average of six hours daily. The data were not conjured out of thin air or from some run-of-the-mill surveys but came from the Department of Information, Communications and Technology (DICT), which means they carry a cachet of legitimacy.
