IN a rare act of national healing, the Indonesian government has decided to indemnify victims of past political injustices and open a new chapter in its colorful history.
It is an ambitious act that aims to provide material benefits to the relatives of more than half a million people that died or disappeared in the anti-communist purge in the 1960s and during the protests that brought down the Suharto regime years later. A voluntary initiative of the Widodo government, it aims to foster a more cohesive and more humane Indonesian society and bury a dark period in its history. It also provides a shining example for others to follow; if it works in Indonesia, it should work here in the Philippines for one.
