THE peso and the stock market opened the week on a positive note, with investor sentiment said to have been buoyed by a new hedging facility, the appointment of a new central bank chief, and increased business optimism.

The currency strengthened by 7 centavos to P55.70 against the dollar, while the benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) surged by 129.54 points, or 2.03 percent, to end the day at 6,523.09.
