The lead-up and Draft Day 2023 itself were loaded with surprise deals, trades, and of course the selection of the next generation of NBA players. Here are the big winners from that whirlwind of activities:
1) San Antonio Spurs - The Victor Wembanyama era has begun in Texas. "Wemby" is a once-in-a-generation player who is the best prospect to come into the league since LeBron James was drafted back in 2003. Wemby is the Spurs' third No. 1 pick and the first time since Tim Duncan in 1997. This led to five NBA championships until 2014. Wemby is an oversized center (7-4) with the handles of a point guard, shooting and mobility of a small forward, and the rebounding and shot-blocking of a conventional big. Already, there are expectations of super stardom but like any young player, he will need to acclimatize to the NBA style of play and the Spurs, with their culture, is the perfect place to do that.
