OVER the years, professional coincidences have meant that I have had the pleasure of visiting Miami in Florida, USA quite a few times. The other day, my arrival in the American "Sunshine State" gave rise to drawing parallels to another place that I also visit regularly for professional reasons: Manila in the Philippines. At first glance, one would think that it is impossible to draw meaningful economic parallels between these two metropolises, but the realities are interesting.

During the European summertime, the time difference between my own home country Denmark and the two big cities is six hours in each direction; when one gets off the plane, it is 33 degrees in both places and with the same high humidity. Therefore, it can be no surprise that the trees alternate between ordinary trees and palm trees in the same way. So far so good, and yes, it just expresses a geographical coincidence.
