PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. received on Monday special stamps commemorating the 125th Philippine Independence Day.
Postmaster General Luis Carlos presented the commemorative stamp frame to the President during the celebration of Philippine Independence Day held at the Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park, Manila.
The commemorative stamp features two important moments in Philippine history: the sewing of the Philippine flag by Marcela and Lorenza Agoncillo, and Delfina Herbosa Natividad in Hong Kong, and when Emilio Aguinaldo waved the very same flag during the Declaration of Philippine Independence in Kawit, Cavite, on June 12, 1898.
Starting Tuesday, June 13, the Philippine Postal Corp. (PHLPost) will start selling the stamps to the public at the SM Manila Postal Counter in support of the commemoration of the 125th Anniversary of Philippine Independence and Nationhood.
The official logo for the 125th Anniversary of Philippine Independence and Nationhood appears on the official first-day cover.
Carlos said PHLPost has been at the forefront of the protection, preservation and conservation of history and culture through the issuance of postage stamps that have been widely recognized here and abroad.
'The beauty, uniqueness and special significance of commemorative stamps continue to be a source of fascination and of great value to collectors. Even during these difficult times, postage stamps continue to be the source of inspiration, courage and patriotism among Filipinos,' he said.
The historic Manila Central Post Office Building was recently gutted by fire.
Carlos said though they are saddened by the unfortunate incident, they were able to salvage some important stamps.
He said they are now in the process of retrieving valuable and historic items placed in the stamp vault, which was left unharmed during the fire.
'As we commemorate the sacrifices and triumphs of our forebears, in the face of adversity, our people at PHLPost will rise from the ashes and become resilient and strong,' Carlos said.
PHLPost has printed 40,000 copies sold at P16 for each of the two different designs of the stamps.
