AFTER international negotiators committed to forging a draft treaty on ending plastic pollution by November, the head of the United Nations stressed the importance of curbing the "catastrophic" consequences of plastic waste.

"Every year, over 400 million tons of plastic are produced worldwide, one third of which are used just once," UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a message to mark World Environment Day on Monday.
