THE daily trips of the Philippine National Railways' (PNR) Alabang to Calamba route will be suspended starting July 2 to give way for the construction of the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR), the Department of Transportation (DoTr) announced on Friday.

The department said only the 4:38 a.m. and 7:56 p.m. trips will be affected by the route's closure. About 467 commuters take each trip daily. DoTr Undersecretary for Railways Cesar Chavez said an elevated, double-track and electrified train system will be built directly above the PNR tracks, speeding up the construction of the NSCR by eight months. The NSCR will replace the PNR's present street level, single-track and diesel locomotive system.
