AS a Pinoy fond of many things Chinese, I am among many Filipinos who hope the Chinese leadership will one day abandon its untenable position and come to terms with the laws and conventions governing the community of nations — despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. And because I am a hopeless optimist, I am looking forward to China, one day, giving a premium to Filipino-Chinese relations that transcend many generations. I am optimistic that China will value the Philippines as a friend, not a vassal, and deal with its people in parity. I am hopeful that China as a major power and advanced economy will set the example of upholding world and regional order and not behave as a rogue nation. But are these mere musings from a hopeless optimist?
