US reaffirmation of PH defense pact 'significant' – analyst

THE United States' reaffirmation of its obligation under the Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) with the Philippines is 'significant and timely' amid rising tensions in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea), a political analyst said Friday.

This, after US President Joe Biden told his counterpart President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. that Washington's commitment to the defense of its ally was 'ironclad,' including in the South China Sea, where Manila is under pressure from China.
