Sustainable building in the Philippines: Gaining more ground

AS far as sustainable architecture goes, the building industry in the Philippines has its work cut out for it. At the forefront of this green movement are architects faced with the demands of a post-pandemic world in an increasingly warming planet. Their role is simple, though not easy: to use design in providing solutions to the global catastrophe that is climate change while remaining cognizant of people's health and social needs.

The right measures

n The exterior (left) and interior of the "Zero Carbon Resort Cottage, essentially an off-the-grid bamboo resort cottage in Puerto Princesa, Palawan province that was designed for the Center for Appropriate Technology (Austria). The cottage is part of the Zero Carbon Resorts project that won in 2015 the Global Human Settlement Award, which is given by the Global Forum on Human Settlements in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Program in New York City.
