THE history of Education in the Philippines is as long as the Filipinos' battles with their major colonizers who left lasting imprints in the Filipino culture.

In 1521, Spanish missionaries replaced tribal tutors. Education was religion-oriented and was almost exclusive to the elite. The Educational Decree of 1863 made education more accessible to the masses.
