Academic rights and prerogatives: The case of the UP Board of Regents and the selection of the UP Diliman chancellor

FIRST of all, I have to make a full disclosure. I am now and have been a professor at the School of Environmental Science and Management (Sesam) at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) since October 8 of last year.

But my views in this column do not in any way represent my school, even as I plead my right to express my opinion on the matter. These are the same rights that are being invoked by colleagues from UP Diliman (UPD) who have expressed their dissatisfaction with the decision of the UP Board of Regents (BOR) on the selection of their chancellor.
