A silent catastrophe

TODAY'S topic is a bit of a departure from my usual fare, but it is a tragic story that needs more attention than it has been getting from the rest of the world. Even though it has little direct relevance to the Philippines, at least as far as I know, what is about to happen in the troubled Caribbean nation of Haiti is going to have a ripple effect across the entire world.

Haiti occupies the western two-fifths of the island of Hispaniola, and is the largest country by population in the Caribbean with an estimated 11.4 million people. It is the only country in the world to have gained its independence (in 1804 from France) through a successful slave revolt, and is one of only two countries in the Americas (Canada is the other one) where French is an official language.

Frightened civilians run for cover in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, on Friday, March 3, 2023, as some of the country’s few remaining police face off against armed gang members. AP PHOTO
