THE announcement that the government will soon enter into discussions with China over joint oil and gas exploration in the West Philippine Sea has drawn sharp criticism from many quarters. We believe this is shortsighted and contradictory, particularly since some of those condemning the government for its willingness to have a dialogue with China are also vocal critics of the expansion of the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) with the United States and the designation of new sites that can host US forces.
