APRIL 5 is one of the most important traditional festivals in China — the Tomb-Sweeping Day (Qingming) when families pay tribute to their ancestors and dead family members. It is also an occasion to pay respect to the heroes who sacrificed their lives for peace and freedom. I went with my colleagues from the Chinese embassy yesterday on an annual tomb-sweeping tour to the Manila Chinese Cemetery for the Chinese martyred during the fight against the Japanese invasion in this country. The tomb-sweeping ceremony was also a way to encourage us as followers of a just and noble cause to build on history and work for a brighter future. Ours is still an era rife with challenges. It is also one brimming with hope. Upholding world peace and security and promoting global development and prosperity should be the common pursuit of all countries. I have thus written this article to share my thoughts with the readers on this very solemn occasion.
