Puerto Galera remains oil slick free, officials say

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro: The tourist town of Puerto Galera remains free from the oil slick that is advancing in many areas in the province, parts of the Visayas and Batangas, including the marine protected area, the Verde Island Passage.

This was confirmed after the province, through the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP or Provincial Board), passed a resolution during a special session on Friday placing some areas under a state of calamity but did not include Puerto Galera.

The famed white beach of Puerto Galera remains unaffected by the oil spill caused by a sunken tanker off the coast of Oriental Mindoro. The MT Princess Empress sank last Feb. 28, 2023, affecting the environment and livelihood in at least four provinces. The tnker was found on Tuesday, March 21 with the help of a remotely operated vessel (RVO) from Japan. PHOTO BY RENE H. DILAN
