The peso gained at the start of the trading week but the stock market fell, weighed down by continued concerns over the health of the global banking system.

The currency strengthened by three and a half centavos to close at P54.675 against dollar while the benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) lost 18.70 points or 0.29 percent to end the day at 6,451.02.
