Lawyer Marites Barrios-Taran has been appointed as the new director general of Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF). A Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Taran was the designated board secretary of the Board of Regents of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) prior to her appointment at KWF. She also served as vice president for administration and finance, university legal counsel, and director 2 in the House of Representatives. She will work in close association with the executive committee consisting of Commissioners Arthur Casanova, Carmelita Abdurahman and Benjamin Mendillo Jr. Pursuant to the mandate of the Constitution, the Philippine Congress enacted Republic Act 7104 in 1991, which provided for the creation of KWF, which is tasked to develop, preserve, and promote Filipino and other Philippine languages.
