Warriors sweep UAAP Season 85 fencing

(UPDATE) AS expected, powerhouse team University of the East (UE) bagged all titles in four categories following a thrilling final day of UAAP Season 85 Fencing Championships last Sunday at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila.

The boys team of the Red Warriors won the championship for the 11th straight time, while the girls and men's won it for the 10th and ninth, respectively. As for the women's side, it was back-to-back for the Lady Warriors.

Overall, however, it was the 16th overall for the men's and 14th overall for the women's, and since the inclusion of the girls division in 2012, this is the eight time in the last nine seasons that UE won in all four divisions.

The only time the Warriors missed on all four was in Season 81 when Ateneo captured the women's championship, but UE won all four again in Season 82 before the Covid-19 pandemic happened that scratched the fencing tournament in Seasons 83 and 84.

'It was all worth it, the long wait, the sacrifices, the hard work and effort of our student-athletes and all fellow UE fencing coaches,' said UE's fencing head coach Rolando 'Amat' Canlas Jr.

'We did it again for the school, and we're very happy. It was a tough competition with the improvement of fencers from other schools. But we proved that UE remains No. 1 in UAAP fencing,' he added.

It didn't come on a silver platter for UE, however, as the girls needed to win gold in the epee team. Already gold medal winners in the girls foil team event, Margarette Gervacio and Aubrey Fernandez teamed up with Nina Canlas and Irish Manaois as they edged La Salle Zobel in the finals 45-34.

It was a must-win for UE's girls' epee team after University of Santo Tomas girls sabre team defeated UE in the finals 45-41. The two schools finished with three gold medals each but UE had more silvers with four and a bronze, which broke the tie with UST.
