IN two separate actions earlier this week, the Department of Agriculture (DA) and local government officials acting on the DA's advice took harsh measures to fight the spread of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus, commonly referred to as the bird flu. The DA has been under fire for the past several months for a variety of food supply issues, and anti-bird flu measures have added to those problems by reducing supplies of poultry and eggs. However, in this case give the DA some credit for effectively preventing what is merely a concerning situation from becoming a catastrophe.
