BESIDES Valentine's Day, Filipinos come together every February of each year to give life to former president Corazon Aquino's Proclamation No. 683 in 1991, declaring the period National Arts Month (NAM). Since then, the observance of NAM has indicated the importance of arts and culture to national leadership.
Reading through the proclamation, it is heartwarming to note that the national government enjoins the people to remember the month of February in their hearts and minds as the time for nationalism and pride in being Filipino. Therefore, it is truly fitting that the country consistently celebrates Filipino arts and culture and the traditions and values that find creative expression. These come to life through music, literature, dance, cinema, visual arts, architecture and theater, among others. For the past 33 years, this annual celebration has served as a platform for artists and cultural workers to showcase and further develop their skills and talents while at the same time encouraging an appreciation and developing audiences for the arts.
