THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in partnership with the local government of Odiongan, Romblon has launched a new shared facility for cocoa farmers in the area.
DTI Region 4B (Mimaropa) regional director Rodolfo Mariposque said the project involves the provision of a P2-million cacao processing equipment and chocolate center and a water purification system worth P400,000.
'I hope that it is best to establish a relationship with the local government to support our local product,' Mariposque said.
For her part, Odiongan Mayor Trina Firmalo-Fabric said the shared facility will benefit farmers in the locality. 'Finally, this is our dream for our farmers.'
Among the products that can be made from cacao include nibs, tablea, powder and butter. The country, however, is still an importer of cocoa products including chocolate products.
Besides the DTI, the Department of Agriculture is pushing for the development of the country's cacao industry. Agriculture Senior Undersecretary Domingo Panganiban met with the members of the Philippine Cacao Industry and Consul General Armi Lopez Garcia on Dec. 14, 2022, to discuss short- and long-term plans that will boost production and enhance profitability of the cacao sector.
During the meeting, the group presented recommendations to enhance the cacao value chain, which include a proposal for the establishment of trading posts, conduct of a cacao festival and congress, and mainstreaming cacao by-products.
