It was a quiet Thursday night when The Sunday Times Magazine visited Rodolfo Gabriel 2nd, John Philip Aricheta and Christian Viñas during a recording session for their upcoming concert. If their names don't ring a bell, it's because they are more popularly known for bringing to life three of the biggest names in Philippine drag today — Precious Paula Nicole, Brigiding and Viñas Deluxe.
On stage, they look impeccably fabulous in their over-the-top hair, makeup and gowns. They likewise give the most convincing lip-synching numbers, and their high-octane dance routines (sometimes involving aerial feat) leave audiences' jaws dropping. It can be said that after being in lockdown for almost two years and seeing nearly every type of entertainment possible, the unexpected draw of drag performances and the drag queens' (how performers are called) rapport with their audience certainly bring a new reason for people to attend live events again.
While these three talented beings have been doing the art of Drag for a decade, on average, it is through the success of the reality show 'Drag Race Philippines' Season 1 that they gained popularity, not only among drag fans but the general public as well.
Coming from their fabulous looks in the series, it was definitely a surprise to see Gabriel, Aricheta and Viñas outside their alter ego on that quiet Thursday night. For as flamboyant and loud as they are on stage, the trio looked as cool and casual as any young city professional trying to find their place in the sun.
But it seems they have already found their niche, and it is where fans will see them five days from now as they mount their first major concert as a group. It is and will be a definitive career highlight for each of the three.
Titled 'Divine Divas: The Ultimate Drag Experience,' the pre-Valentine concert brings the fabulous expression that is drag to, for the first time, the mainstream concert stage.
Co-produced by celebrity couple Ice Seguerra and Liza Diño's Fire & Ice Media Production and Sylvia Sanchez's Nathan Studios, the concert is set on February 10 at New Frontier Theater at The Araneta City in Cubao, Quezon City.
'It's a reward for our hard work. It's a reward for following our dreams and for persevering. It's also a reward for our fans who have supported us since day 1. We want to reward them with a really good show,' Brigiding told The Sunday Times Magazine.
Precious and Viñas agreed with Brigiding's goals while adding that the concert holds a deeper meaning for them and their community.
'It really means so much to us because it was just a wish, a tiny hope, something we would manifest during one of our lowest points. When we were out of jobs and doing what we could during the pandemic. At that time, manifesting to have a concert, to have our own songs seemed far fetch, but now we have those and more,' Precious said.
