Jema Galanza and the art of slowing down

VOLLEYBALL is a game of speed and quick reflexes.

A player must be fast enough to read and react to what's happening on the court, and decide quickly what to do with the ball — whether that player is going to save it with a dig, kill it with a spike, or set it up to a teammate for an attack.

But deception and slowing down is also a part of it, especially when a player is going for an off speed attack.

Jema Galanza, 26, is one of those players in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) who does this kind of attack splendidly.

Interestingly, slowing down — being patient — is also one of the valuable lessons she learned in life.

'For me [the most important lesson I've learned so far is that] you need to enjoy the moment, be that in volleyball or in life. Don't be in haste,' Galanza shared to celebrity host Luis Manzano in 'Luis Listens.'

'I used to be frantic that I wanted to immediately achieve my goals, which is impossible to happen. Right now, I want to take it one step at a time. Whatever that one goal is, I'll do that first [before doing the others].'

Like most volleybelles, playing volleyball serves as a sanctuary for Galanza. She loves every bit of it. The pride of San Pedro, Laguna, though, admitted that the sport also takes a toll on her mentally.

Slowing down and learning to step back from the game is the key for her salvation.

'Volleyball is really my stress reliever. I really like training. I really like to be on the court. I really like to have a ball on my hands. But lately, volleyball's also taking a toll on me so every off season, I don't want anything volleyball related. I don't want to think about it.

'As of right now, I enjoy doing karaoke with my [friends to relieve my volleyball stress],' shared the Creamline Cool Smasher.
