'Kingpin' wins duel

BASETH 'Kingpin' Mocaibat of Dasmariñas City demolished the 'Fire Dragon' Chang Jung-Lin of Chinese Taipei to reign supreme in the Sharks One-on-One race-to-63 10-ball showdown that concluded Monday night at the state-of-the-art Sharks Billiards and Pool Arena in Diliman, Quezon City.

On January 14, the Kingpin from Cavite took control of the game early in the grueling three-stage duel and extinguished any attempt by the Taiwanese Fire Dragon to steal the momentum for a 21-6 lead.

Chang again failed to catch fire on the second day of competition on January 15 that enabled Mocaibat, a ranking pool player in the country, to widen his lead to 42-24 in the tournament organized by the Sharks Billiards League (SBL) and supported by Bugsy Promotion, Hardtimes Sports Bar, Andy Billiards Cloth, and the Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines (BMPAP).

In the third and final day, Mocaibat managed to foil every attack launched by Chang and masterfully kept his rival at bay en route to a 63-39 annihilation in this 10-ball event sanctioned by the Games and Amusement Board.

'Heavy pa rin ang mga pambato nating bilyarista. Malaking tulong ang mga ganitong uri ng kumpetisyon na may mahuhusay na dayuhang kalaban. Kaya tuluy-tuloy ang Sharks sa pagtuklas ng mga potential at international caliber pool players,' said tournament director Hadley Mariano, son of businessman and longtime billiards patron Perry Mariano of Quezon City.

'Itong bagong format ng Sharks na safety after the break ay kakaiba at sa SBL lang ito implemented kung saan ay pinahahalagahan ang husay at safety play ng isang player tulad ni Baseth.'

Aside from cash prize, Mocaibat will gain vital points in the player rankings of the BMPAP.

'Naunahan ko si Fire Dragon kaya 'di ko na hinayaan pang makabuga ng apoy. This victory is for our bayang bilyarista,' he said.
