THE National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Saturday that more deaths have been recorded, bringing the number to 20 with one reported missing due to the low pressure area (LPA) and shear line.More than 552,000 individuals have also been displaced by the weather systems. In its latest report, the NDRRMC said Region 8 (Eastern Visayas) has the most number of deaths with six; followed by Region 5 (Bicol) with five; Regions 9 (Zamboanga Peninsula) and 10 (Northern Mindanao) with four each; and Region 11 (Davao) with one. While there was still one missing person in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, it said that the eight injured individuals were from Regions 9 and 10.The NDRRMC also said that out of the 552,131 individuals or 133,258 families from 744 villages affected by the two weather systems, 130,168 individuals were from Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan) while 115,562 were from Region 3 (Central Luzon).Meanwhile, 80,082 individuals were displaced in Region 11 and 79,842 individuals were affected in Region 9, the agency said. The NDRRMC said 79,413 individuals or 15,447 families were still seeking refuge at 127 evacuation centers while 5,150 families opted to stay elsewhere or with their relatives.Damage to infrastructure is estimated at P171,230,996 and damage to agriculture is at P257,765,961. One province and seven cities and municipalities have also declared a state of calamity, according to the latest bulletin of the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD).The OCD said Region 10 turned out to be the hardest hit in terms of damage to agriculture at P66,555,239, followed by Region 6 (P49,517,773) and Region 11 (P10,304,431).On infrastructure, the OCD reported the damage at P131,746,760 in Mimaropa and P34,384,236 in Region 10.The LPA, along with the shear line — the point where cold and warm air converge — and the northeast monsoon locally known as 'amihan,' has been bringing heavy to intense rains in many parts of the Visayas, Mindanao, Southern and Central Luzon.Over the next 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services (Pagasa) said that the LPA, last spotted past 3 a.m. at the coastal waters of Lanuza, Surigao del Norte, is affecting Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, Dinagat Islands and Surigao del Norte with widespread rain showers and thunderstorms. The same weather disturbance is also bringing heavy to intense rains over Mimaropa, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon), and the rest of Visayas and Mindanao.Meanwhile, amihan is affecting Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon where partly cloudy to cloudy skies with light rains may prevail.

FLOODWATER Continuous rains since Monday, Jan. 9, 2023, have flooded many villages in Zamboanga City, affecting thousands of families. According to Pagasa, the flooding was brought about by the shear line and a low pressure area in the region. PHOTO BY AL JACINTO
