THE episode of the GMA-7 TV show "Maria Clara at Ibarra" last Friday created some controversy, incurring the ire of some, including academics, because it radically changed the narrative which Jose Rizal wrote. It showed Crisostomo Ibarra, played by Dennis Trillo, publicly rebelling against the oppressive structures of Spanish Church and State.
