Bay Area team doctor Irving Bernardo said American guard Myles Powell recovered just 'within the time frame' they have set, which allowed the Seton Hall to get the green light to play in Game Six of the 2022-23 PBA Commissioner's Cup Finals on Wednesday.
Powell got reactivated on Tuesday in lieu of Canadian import Andrew Nicholson, who badly sprained his left ankle during the dying seconds of Game Three. Nicholson has been relegated to the reserve list.
'We've worked on him (Powell) and treated him in the expected time frame of his recovery,' Bernardo told the Manila Times.
The 6-foot-2 Powell tore a tendon on his toe during practice just before the top seed Dragons played the no. 8 seed Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the quarterfinals.
Nicholson has since played as the team's reinforcement with Bay Area clobbering ROS by 30 points in their quarterfinals, before subduing San Miguel, 3-1 in the semifinals to advance to the Finals versus Ginebra.
The timing for Powell couldn't have been perfect for Bay Area, which missed Nicholson in the last two games of the title series.
While the Dragons managed to beat the Gin Kings, 92-84 in Game Four despite playing without the 6-9 Nicholson, Ginebra got back at the guest team with a 101-91 triumph to move at the cusp of the championship with its 3-2 lead.
Now, with Powell in harness, Bay Area coach Brian Goorjian has a new weapon so to speak, to use against Ginebra, which will be playing against the American guard for the first time.
Nicholson served as Bay Area's import the first time the team faced Ginebra, with the guest squad losing that one badly, 111-93z
Dr. Bernardo said Powell didn't undergo surgery when the former Philadelphia 76ers guard got injured. Instead, he simply underwent physical therapy and sports rehab.
'Currently he's no longer bothered by his toe,' added the Bay Area team doctor.
Powell has been scintillating during his eight-game PBA stint as he averaged 37.3 points, over eight rebounds and close to three assist.
The 25-year-old American dropped a PBA career-best 50 points during the team's runaway 120-87 demolition of ROS on Nov. 11 during their elimination round tussle.
That game saw him fore a total of 11 three pointers on the way to tying the fourth most all-time made by an import in one game while converting 15-of-25 from the floor in just 31 minutes of play. RICHARD DY
