Sen. Christopher Lawrence 'Bong' Go says he supports an extension of the state of the calamity in the Philippines amid a reported surge of Covid-19 in China. Speaking to reporters in Davao de Oro on Jan. 5, 2023, Go said, however, that it is President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s prerogative to extend or not the declaration, which his predecessor Rodrigo Duterte had issued at the height of the pandemic and which lapsed on Dec. 31, 2022. Go, chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, said that existing Covid-19 measures such as the vaccination efforts, emergency hiring and use of Quick Response Funds of local government units are anchored on the declaration.
