NLEX is bringing in a certified NBA veteran in Jonathon Simmons as the team's import for the season-ending PBA Governors' Cup.
Coach Frankie Lim said the 33-year-old Simmons is set to join the team when he arrives some time next week.
The 62-year-old Lim described Simmons as 'an all-around player who can score.'
'He can play multiple positions which will create a lot of mismatches,' Lim told The Manila Times on Wednesday.
Simmons played one year each in college for Paris Junior College, Midland and University of Houston before declaring his eligibility for the NBA draft in 2012. He went undrafted though.
He went on to toil in the NBA Developmental League, beginning with the Sugar Land Legends followed by the Austin Toros/Spurs, before joining the San Antonio Spurs in the 2015 Las Vegas Summer League.
It was with the Spurs that he flaunted his offensive might. In fact, he saved his best for last when he dropped 23 points, hauled down three rebounds, three assists and two steals to help San Antonio win the 2015 NBA Las Vegas Summer League championship over the Phoenix Suns.
Simmons went on to play for the San Antonio Spurs from 2015-17, before seeing action for the Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers from 2017-2019.
Listed at 6-6, Simmons enjoyed his best season in the NBA in the 2017-18 season after averaging 13.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists after logging 29.4 minutes in 50 games.
