MOST of the public missed the point when the Department of Trade and Industry's (DTI) Consumer Protection Group came out with a series of consumer tips. The public went on the negative when it was shown as saying that "it demeans the consumers who have less." But come to think of it, is providing cheaper and affordable alternatives asking consumers to settle for less? Aren't they just doing their job as they are responsible for consumer protection? Juxtapose these tips with the biggest concerns of Pahayag End-of-Year survey results and one will see that what the Consumer Protection Group did was right on the dot.
When asked to select and rank the biggest concerns of their households heading into the first quarter of 2023, the 1,500 respondents of the Nov. 25-30, 2022 survey period picked the highest ranking issues as: 1) not being able to afford to pay for basic needs at 17 percent; 2) difficulty in finding employment at 14 percent; 3) losing a job at 12 percent; 4) not getting enough pay, also at 12 percent; and 5) getting sick with a serious illness at 9 percent.
