A GROUP of highly empowered workers was successful with a new system where only one worker was needed from a previously required three. Imagine the cost savings in terms of pay. Management was happy, so what was next? To ensure the success of the improvement effort, it must reiterate a firm commitment not to dismiss the workers who were in excess of those needed. Otherwise, management can't perpetuate similar efforts.
That's not all. Management can maximize the success by not simply moving the two excess workers to other work areas. It should be done in a strategic manner. However, we have to understand that reassigning people is a management prerogative. It is the employer's privilege to move people around so the organization can maximize their full potential.
