TODAY's column and the next will focus on two personalities that have made an impact not only on me but on Philippine culture: how they laid the pioneering groundwork in the 1970s which remain quite a challenge to rival today.

At UP, one would expect the handsome band vocalist Boy Camara to be surrounded by female groupies. Boy's voice had a unique character, depending on his mood and the type of song that he wanted to do. When he performed, close your eyes and Elton John appeared in your mind. Then John Lennon. Then Billy Joel. Then Van Morrison. Or Doug Ingle of 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida' by Iron Butterfly.
