HARDLY was there an outcry for a serious reassessment of the performance of the University of the Philippines (UP) when the latest ranking of the top universities for 2023 in the world was released by the Times Higher Education's World University Rankings.

In the past, UP ranked at the 351-400 top tier universities in the world. However, on the 2023 list, Ateneo has dislodged UP to form part of the 351-400 top tier universities' club while UP slid to the top 801-1,000.
