SINGAPORE is a dynamic city-state. It knows how to anticipate problems and look for solutions. It has one of the most technologically advanced military in the world. It has museums that threaten to rival the bigger and more famous modern art repositories in Europe.
Singaporeans are mostly humble, hardworking and pragmatic, like my friend, Lam Chuan Leong. He was chairman of a host of government offices and permanent secretary to a slew of important government ministries as well as ambassador-at-large with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Yet, Professor Lam refuses to be addressed as your excellency or ambassador, although he could use those titles even though he has retired from government service. There is also Raymond Ang of Singapore Realtors Inc. who would rather be hanged than cheat another person of his money.
