Spyware a great threat to journalists – watchdog

NEW YORK CITY: Sophisticated spyware poses an 'existential' threat to investigative journalists, causing sources to remain silent for fear of being identified, a United States media watchdog warned in a report on Thursday.

Echoing demands by dozens of nongovernmental organizations, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) called for an immediate moratorium on the development, export, sale and use of spyware until robust guarantees are implemented to safeguard journalists.
