TMT Anniversary
More effort needed for green energy shift

TRANSITIONING to green energy has become even more urgent in light of increased climate change impacts. But while the government has already taken some steps to move away from fossil fuels and carbon-intensive energies, coal continues to dominate the Philippines' energy mix.

Most of the country's power is generated via imported materials (56.8 percent), Department of Energy (DoE) data show. Coal imports reached 31.238 million metric tons (MMT) in 2021 while total coal consumption was at 35.836 MMT, which means an 87.2-percent dependence on coal imports.
