US targets 'senior' IS jihadist in Syria's northeast – Centcom

Beirut, Lebanon: American forces killed a 'senior' member of the jihadist Islamic State group Thursday (Friday in Manila) in a pre-dawn raid on northeastern Syria, the US military's Central Command said.

The operation is the latest US effort to clamp down on IS jihadists who have been territorially defeated but still orchestrate attacks in Syria and neighboring Iraq.

A US airborne operation involving multiple helicopters left one person dead in a government-controlled area of Syria's northeast, Syrian state TV reported on Oct. 6, 2022 (October 7 in Manila). It is the first such operation in government-held territory, the Britain-based Observatory for Human Rights said, adding that the victim was likely a member of the Islamic State group. AFP PHOTO
