THIS is the sort of topic that seems guaranteed to annoy absolutely everyone, which makes it pure gold as far as I'm concerned. Over the past few months, I have read a number of commentaries in different places — the most recent one was in The Atlantic about a week ago — all of which have either been bemused or alarmed by the rapid spread of a new kind of religious fundamentalism, but one that is based on politics rather than actual religions.
