THE season of the southwest monsoon, locally known as "habagat", is over as the northeast monsoon or "amihan" has begun, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) announced on Wednesday.

Pagasa Administrator Vicente Malano said in a statement that recent analyses indicated a significant weakening of the southwest monsoon over the last few days and the strengthening of the high pressure over the Asian continent that have led to the gradual changing of the season.
