WASHINGTON, D.C.: A United States Senate committee on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila) took the first step toward Washington directly providing billions of dollars in military aid to Taiwan and making ties more official, ramping up support following soaring tensions with China.
The US has sold weapons to Taiwan for decades, but a proposed piece of legislation will go further by providing American security assistance worth $4.5 billion over four years, a step sure to infuriate Beijing. It also lays out sanctions on the East Asian country if it uses force to try to seize the self-ruling island.
