TOKYO: Japan reported on Thursday that it posted a record 2.82-trillion-yen ($19.66-billion) trade deficit in August on surging energy prices and a plunge in the yen inflating the price of imports.

In a report, the East Asian country's Finance Ministry said the figure in August — the 13th straight month its trade balance is in negative territory — surpassed the 2.80-trillion-yen ($19.53-billion) deficit registered in January 2014.
