VATICAN CITY: Pope Francis heads to Kazakhstan next week, despite an injured knee, for a visit likely to be dominated by tensions in Central Asia following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The 85-year-old pontiff, who uses a wheelchair and has admitted he must slow down or consider retirement, will take part in an interreligious summit in the capital Nur-Sultan from September 13 to 15.
