Vergeire: Sin taxes help to DoH programs

Department of Health (DoH) Officer in Charge Maria Rosario Vergeire has underscored the two-way benefits of sin taxes — discouraging unhealthy lifestyles and providing funds for life-saving measures such as the Universal Health Care Law.

Vergeire said that sin tax collection helped decrease the number of smokers in the country from 30 percent in 2012 to 24 percent in the most recent Global Adult Tobacco Survey conducted in 2015.
