WHEN Christian Bello and his wife established Acima Meda Philippines Inc. in 2003, they did so with zero knowledge of the aquaculture industry. The couple was ready to immigrate to the United States when their uncle invited them to engage in a family business — an enterprise that eventually grew into one of the largest bangus (milkfish) producers in the country.
At that time, Christian was hungry to explore new territory. He didn't want to be in the same field as his father, who was a top executive for a multinational petroleum company. His father's contractors often called Christian an underachiever, simply because he married young and had degrees unrelated to the petroleum industry.
