TARLAC: To further protect the business sector in Tarlac on their ventures, especially the new ones, the Department of Trade Industry (DTI) conducted training on intellectual property (IP) rights. The activity, which was in partnership with the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), was attended by at least 38 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). During the training, DTI OIC-Provincial Director Florencia Balilo explained the principles of IP, which refers to creations of the mind such as an invention, a design, a brand name, or a literary and artistic work. 'This seminar aims to increase the awareness of the MSMEs on the importance of protecting their intellectual properties and how their business could benefit from it,' she said. Barry Marcelino of IPOPHL discussed patent, trademark, and copyright in business, noting the misconception about IP registration as being costly. Ownership of ideas can be protected through the IPOPHL, which is covered under Republic Act 8293.
