AQUAFEED producers welcomed the government's lifting of the suspension on the importation of processed animal proteins (PAPs) and other ingredients used in aquaculture feeds, which they expect will reverse the decline in fish production and enable expansion.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) authorized the entry of PAPs imports used in fish feed from countries affected by African swine fever (ASF), which it imposed last March to prevent spread of the virus. The agency cited low to medium risk of the virus entering via PAP shipments from ASF-affected countries. Also citing the World Organization for Animal Health Code, the DA order said that the ASF virus is inactivated when meat is subjected to heat for at least 30 minutes at a minimum temperature of 70 degrees Celsius.
