THE click-bait was simply irresistible. When memes and news capsules were posted in social media about the Philippines as being the most stressed and the second angriest and saddest country in Southeast Asia, many people, including myself, reacted. However, before we get stressed, in deep anger and sadness, it is important to look into the survey conducted by Gallup that led to these conclusions. And there we will find that the entire picture is not that all alarming for the country.
This survey is part of the annual activity done by Gallup to assess and quantify global emotions. Its 2022 report covers global data gathered from a probability sample composed of nearly 127,000 respondents conducted through phone and face-to-face interviews in 122 countries and areas in 2021 until early 2022. Each country has at least 1,000 randomly selected respondents, leading to a margin of sampling error that ranged from plus or minus 2 percent to plus or minus 5.5 percent, at a 95-percent level of confidence.
