WHO: 1,700 dead from heat wave in Spain, Portugal

COPENHAGEN: The World Health Organization's (WHO) office in Europe said on Friday the heat wave baking Europe now has caused more than 1,700 deaths on the Iberian peninsula alone and called for joint action to tackle climate change.

'Heat kills. Over the past decades, hundreds of thousands of people have died as a result of extreme heat during extended heat waves, often with simultaneous wildfires,' Hans Kluge, WHO regional director for Europe, said in a statement.
